Ways to Prepare for Hurricane and Storm Season

During the summer months, high temperatures and storm season are common in Central Florida. It is important to be prepared for hurricane season, whether you are a long-time resident of the Sunshine State or a new arrival. This is especially crucial because storms in this region can be unpredictable. While Central Florida may not experience the full force of hurricanes and severe storms like the coastal areas, they can still cause significant damage and stress, such as power outages, property damage, fallen trees, and floods. Even properties that are hundreds of miles inland can be affected by heavy winds and water, and the impacts can be devastating not only during full-blown hurricanes but also during tropical storms and depressions.

Typically, we are informed a few days in advance when a major storm is approaching the shore. It is essential to utilize this time wisely for preparation! Below are our best recommendations for getting ready for a hurricane or any significant storm:

  • Ensure that you have enough water and non-perishable food to last for at least a week.

  • It is recommended to have a supply of medications that will last for at least 2 weeks.

  • Make sure to have a good supply of batteries and flashlights on hand.

  • Make sure to have all the necessary items such as money, candles, a medical kit, paper goods, supplies for pets, an NOAA Weather Radio, books/games/puzzles (especially if you have children!), extra chargers, and other important things.

  • Place your important documents and items in a secure, safe, and moisture-free location.

  • Keep a record of essential telephone numbers.

  • To protect your home from the storm, cover your windows with boards and avoid being near them.

  • Refuel your vehicle with gasoline.

  • Prune the trees and shrubs surrounding your house.

  • Be sure to examine your property for any risk of flooding in order to be ready.

  • It is not recommended to use generators, gas grills, or charcoal grills indoors.

  • Do not attempt to drive through water that is in motion, even if the water level is low.

  • Develop an evacuation strategy that includes alternative routes in the event of road blockages.

  • It is important to adhere to evacuation instructions as it is always better to be safe than to regret not doing so.

  • One option to defend against flooding is to utilize sandbags.

  • It is not common for flood insurance to be included in home insurance, therefore it is important to refer to FEMA's flood and risk maps to assess whether getting flood insurance is necessary.

  • When a storm is approaching, it is advisable to fill your bathtub and a few buckets with water.

  • After a storm, it is advised to refrain from touching metal fences as they can conduct electricity due to downed power lines.

  • It is advisable to stay away from areas with heavy flooding as it can pose a risk due to the presence of debris, bacteria, and wildlife.

  • Practice good neighboring habits!!!

Always keep in mind that it is more advantageous to be excessively prepared for a hurricane or storm that may not occur, rather than taking the chance of being unprepared if a severe storm does strike.
